CSA Week 9: A Green Bean Message

Hello All,

PLEASE READ:

PLEASE DRIVE SLOWLY when entering the Nubanusit Community to visit the Farm Store or pick up your CSA. Many children live and play here and community members walk to and from their cars. Please be mindful and respectful when entering the neighborhood. You should be driving between 8-10 mph or slower. Thank you!

On to the farm news of the week. We have been battling the encroaching weeds and getting some areas of the farm cleared out for fall cover crops. Lettuce mix is finally back with three beautiful beds that we have been carefully protecting from deer. We struggled in July with lack of water and the lettuce beds not producing the quantities we were hoping for, but it is back at last!

This weekend Jasen and GH started to setup our new solar pump out in the hayfield. We received a grant this spring for the pump and are excited to get it up and running. We currently rely on an old gas powered pump to water our far hoop houses in the hayfield and are looking forward to making the switch to solar.

We hope everyone is enjoying the summer's bounty in both vegetables, sunshine and thunderstorms. Happy August!

Our Farm Store is open every day and is self serve. Send us an email or give us a call with any questions. We stock it on Wednesday afternoons. Currently lots of tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, lettuce and more can be found in the store.

Find our produce and eggs at Nature's Green Grocer, Rosaly's Farmstand, Roy's Market and in the delicious food at The Root Cafe in Temple.

Please return egg cartons, pint containers and granola jars to the Farm Store. We greatly appreciate it!

What's in my share this week?

This week may include:

Kale - chop leaves and stems and sauté with oil, salt and pepper.

Swiss Chard - rainbow chard best sautéed with oil, soy sauce and sesame seeds.

Cabbage - green cabbage ready to stir fry or mix in with a salad.

Onions - on Friday we harvested all of our red onions and will bring in the rest of the yellow onions this week. We are quite pleased with them this year.

Head Lettuce - a mix of romaine, green butter and red curly.

Leaf Lettuce - a mix of red and green flat and curly. Washed, bagged and ready to salad!

Bell and Frying Peppers - a mix of green, purple, red bell and long frying peppers.  All sweet. The colors are starting to come in at last.

Carrots - our summer carrot beds are pumping out the pounds, enjoy the sweetness!

Summer Squash - the first round of summer squash is petering out but we still have a few more weeks, mostly yellow squash and green zucchini

Cucumbers  - still pumping out many pounds. Delicious eaten fresh or in a salad.

Cherry Tomatoes - a mix of gold, red and peach. Tastes like summer! Try them in the sheet pan chicken recipe below.

Full Size Tomatoes - yellow and orange striped, purple and classic red.

Lunchbox Peppers - a fun snack sized colorful pepper enjoyed by adults and kids alike.

Celery - we made chicken salad with our own celery last week and the taste was perfection.
