CSA Week 5: Tuesday with a side of Tomatoes!

Hello Members,

This week we took a *tiny* farmer vacation up to Vermont where we swam in a waterfall, ate many treats, visited a few farms (we can't help ourselves!) and relaxed in the hammock. When we returned home we zipped out to the hoop houses and harvested cherry tomatoes(!), zucchini and cucumbers, the vines overflowing with ripe and colorful fruit. Every time we return from being away it reminds us that things do survive in our absence, even thrive! And the best things we can do for ourselves sometimes is rest.

And what abundance we have returned to! This is July, where the first sunflowers bob their heads in the breeze, the tomatoes ripen with every passing second, cucumbers cascade from their trellis and the first pole beans are so sweet! We look forward to tomorrow CSA pickup, think cherry tomatoes and zucchini! (see the recipe at the end). The rest of the week will find us weeding, trellising and packing orders to spread the deliciousness around the Monadnock Region.

Make sure to read our whole newsletter for updates recipe ideas and important information.

CSA Pickup Important Reminders Pickup is from 3pm-5:30pm at Nubanusit Neighborhood and Farm. If you can't make it for any reason, send us an email, we have options! Please bring used granola jars back. As well as rubber bands, pint and quart containers. Once you arrive follow the driveway all the way down past the garages until you see a barn and a silver truck. To your right you will see a grass path and another barn with an open sign on it. Follow the path and you will see our Farm Store and CSA pickup. Check out our selection of Orchard Hill bread and cookies at pickup! This week's cookie is Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip. Bring a reusable bag to pack your share into. We also encourage you to bring your own food storage bags for produce. Our veggies can last weeks if stored properly! Click the document below for tips on storing your produce. What's in my share this week?

This week may include:

Kale - chop leaves sauté with oil, salt and pepper. Swiss Chard - chop leaves and stems and sautéed with oil, salt and pepper. Pro Tip: sauté the stems a few minutes before the leaves so they have time to soften. Head Lettuce - green and red. Leaf Lettuce - a mix of 3 leaf lettuces, red and green. Garlic Scapes - Use the whole scape as you would garlic or green onions, makes amazing pesto. Basil, Parsley and Dill Bok Choy - great chopped and sautéed with butter and salt or roasted. Carrots - so sweet and young, best eaten raw in my opinion. Broccoli - roast it, steam it, dip it in hummus. Cabbage - coleslaw, use as a lettuce wrap or sauté with oil, salt and curry powder (my personal favorite). Zucchini - chop and saute briefly with oil and salt. Cucumbers - great for snacking or salads. Cherry Tomatoes - the first of the cherry tomatoes! Pick Your Own This Week - peas, chives, parsley, thyme, rosemary, sage, lemon balm, chamomile and flowers (zinnias, marigolds, cosmos, calendula, some sunflowers). Ask and we will show you. How our CSA works: When you arrive at pickup you will see tables with bins of veggies. Please read the whiteboard before you start so you are familiar with the process. There will be around 12 items to choose from, you may choose 8 of these items. For example one item will be 1 bunch of swiss chard, 4 beets, or 1 bag of spinach. If you want more of something you may take 2 or more of that item but that counts for 2 (or more) of your 8 items. If you have questions about this please ask! Remember to only take what you enjoy and if you don't want 8 items, take less! You will get your value especially if you are really happy with what you are taking home.

Where you can find us this week if you are not a CSA member

I know not everyone is a CSA member so there are many ways to engage with the farm even if you don't get a share each week!

  1. You can usually find us on Tuesdays from 3pm-6pm at the West Peterborough Post Office with our Pop-Up market cart, lots of veggies, granola and other local goodies, however we won't be there this week (7/4), but back next week! July 12th.

  2. Shop our Farm Store any day of the week, during daylight hours at Nubanusit Neighborhood and Farm (Pro-Tip! We stock the store on Wednesdays after CSA so a great day to get the most variety).

  3. Join our CSA! We have a few spots left with a pro-rated price depending on how many weeks remaining, and tell your friends!

  4. Find our veggies at these local spots around the Monadnock region

    • The Root, Temple

    • Nature's Green Grocer, Peterborough

    • Vital Provisions, Peterborough

    • Rosaly's Farmstand, Peterborough

    • The Optimist Cafe, Jaffrey

Recipes Ideas:

This is a classic recipe in my repertoire, easy, delicious and perfectly matched with the season right now. You can even pickup some chicken in the Farm Store. The recipes uses cherry tomatoes (first of the season!) and zucchini as well as artichoke hearts and a perfect combo of spices for an easy, delicious, one sheet pan meal. You can also substitute the chicken for chickpeas for a delicious veggies option.

Send us your recipes if you tried something and love it!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! We are excited to be growing for you.
