CSA Week 15: Farm News

Hello All,Yet another string of beautiful days and we spent our Monday harvesting leaf lettuce, cleaning up squash tarps and covering the carrots to protect them from the deer. We ended it at the pond, soaking in the last rays of summer sun. We hope you have been enjoying these days too! Now on to some important news.

We have some rather big farm news to share. Next year will be our 5th season farming at Nubanusit Neighborhood and Farm and it will also be our last. While we will still run our farm in Peterborough, we are ready to put our time and energy into the land where we live. Our farm has grown up and come to be at Nubi! We are beyond grateful for this special community of people and how it has helped us grow into ourselves as a farm. The support of the Nubanusit Community has shaped our farm in so many ways, and many special people were a part of this. We will continue our relationship with Nubi, but will no longer be farming on the land.

Don't worry though, we will still be growing tons of veggies for you all in the area, the shape of our farm is just changing. In addition, we will be working next year to build up infrastructure both at our home and at the field across the street from Nubi so we will be taking a year off from CSA. I know! It feels sad. But we love CSA and will return to it, we just need a year to have time for other things. Next year our Farm Store will still be open at Nubanusit Neighborhood (and very well stocked) and we will still sell wholesale around town. We are happy to answer your questions about any of this, it is a big transition for our little farm but we are feeling excited and ready for it all. So much love and thanks to each and every one of you.

What's in my share this week?

This week may include:

Kale - green and red curly. Great stir fried, as a kale salad or in soups.

Swiss Chard - rainbow chard best sautéed with oil, soy sauce and sesame seeds.

Leaf Lettuce - a mix of red and green flat and curly. Our new fall beds of leaf lettuce are full grown and we are excited.

Bell and Frying Peppers - All sweet, although we have had the occasional spicy one this summer due to cross pollination.

Carrots - I alternate weeks with beets and carrots and it is a carrot week! We are very happy with these beauties.

Delicata Squash - Best roasted with oil, salt, cinnamon, maybe even a dash of syrup.

Green Beans - best steamed and lightly salted.

Cucumbers  - definitely the last week for cucumbers but enough for everyone to get one last taste.

Cherry Tomatoes - a mix of gold, red and peach. Tastes like summer!

Full Size Tomatoes - yellow and orange striped, purple and classic red.

Onions - red and yellow. The base of so many recipes.Garlic - we will have garlic at CSA until the end of the season, make sure to grab some if you are out.

Brussel Sprouts - every year we grow brussels and the aphids get to them before we can. But they are still delicious. We rinsed them off for you but you might need to again, just a little extra protein! I like to roast with oil, salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder.

Celery - since it is the end of the season we are harvesting whole celery heads.

Potatoes - french fingerling is a variety we grow every year, fingerling but red.  Roast them up and enjoy!

Recipes Ideas:

We are excited about celery heads this week so I included a few celery recipes to get the creativity started. This buffalo, chicken cobb salad looks colorful and delicious (I would sub yogurt for the buttermilk).

Looking for a side, such as a potato salad? Try this potato, bacon and celery salad (psst we have bacon in the Farm Store!)

I asked a CSA member (and professional chef) if she had any delicata squash recipe ideas. She sent me this golden beet and winter squash salad that looks intriguing. I love the ingredient components, sounds delicious.

Have fun! Send us recipes if you tried something and loved it.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

We are excited to be growing for you. See you on Tuesday.
